Town of Dane residents, we are seeing a significant jump in the number of signs (street signs, stop signs, school bus stop signs, rail crossing signs, warning signs, etc) being stolen. Sign theft is distressingly common, but it is still a crime.
Sign theft can lead to other serious problems. Steal an electric fence sign, and someone can get electrocuted. A stolen street sign can lead to emergency vehicles getting lost, putting lives and property at risk. If someone gets hurt because of sign theft, the thief can be sued or even criminally prosecuted. Sign theft also negatively affects tax payers who foot the bill to replace stolen signs.
If you happen to find any sign that appears to belong to the Town of Dane, including those mentioned above, please drop it off near the garage doors at the back of the Dane Town Hall, 213 W. Main St. in Dane.
